When you think of orchids, do you picture a delicate, fragile flower that needs a temperature-controlled greenhouse and a botany degree to keep alive? If so, it’s time to rethink everything you know about these stunning plants. For those of us living in a hot, tropical climate like Cambodia, there is an orchid that not only survives but absolutely thrives in our heat and humidity: the Dendrobium.
Forget the fussy, cool-climate orchids that wilt at the first sign of a hot day. Dendrobiums are the rugged, sun-loving cousins of the orchid world. They are incredibly resilient, easy to care for, and reward you with spectacular sprays of flowers that can last for weeks.

Meet the Tropical Tough Guy: The Dendrobium
You’ve likely seen these beautiful orchids for sale in local markets, often with vibrant purple and white flowers. They grow from cane-like stems and have leathery leaves that are built to withstand the sun. In the wild, they are epiphytes, meaning they grow attached to trees, with their roots exposed to the air. This natural habit is the key to understanding their care.
Dendrobiums love bright light, good airflow, and a distinct wet and dry cycle, making them perfectly suited for a hanging basket on a Cambodian balcony or patio.
A Simple Care Guide for Frequent Blooms
Caring for a Dendrobium is surprisingly simple once you understand its basic needs.
Light: These orchids crave bright, indirect sunlight. A spot that gets morning sun and filtered afternoon light is ideal. If the leaves are a dark, lush green, it's not getting enough light. A bright, grassy green color indicates a happy plant.
Water & Air: Because their roots are designed to be exposed to the air, they hate sitting in a soggy medium. Water them thoroughly, then let the roots dry out almost completely before watering again. In our hot climate, this might be every 1-2 days. Good airflow around the roots is essential to prevent rot.
Fertilizer: To get those stunning flower sprays, you need to feed your plant. Use a balanced orchid fertilizer diluted to half-strength once a week during the growing season.

So, stop fearing orchids! Pick up a Dendrobium from your local market and give it a try. With just a little bit of the right care, you’ll be rewarded with a plant that is as tough as it is beautiful, proving that you don't need to be an expert to enjoy the queen of the flower world.
