There’s something undeniably joyful about a sunflower. Their giant, happy faces seem to smile at the sun, bringing a touch of cheer to any garden. You might think of them as flowers from cooler climates, but guess what? Sunflowers absolutely love the Cambodian sun!
In fact, our tropical climate is perfect for a quick and rewarding gardening project. You can go from planting a single seed to standing next to a giant, blooming sunflower in as little as 60 days. It’s the perfect fun project for beginners, families with kids, or anyone who wants an incredibly "Instagrammable" addition to their garden.

Choosing Your Sunshine
The first step is to pick the right variety for your space.
For Garden Beds: If you have space in the ground, go for a "Mammoth" variety. These can grow over 2 meters tall and produce huge, impressive flower heads.
For Pots & Balconies: If you're gardening in a smaller space, look for "Dwarf" sunflower varieties. These stay compact, usually under a meter tall, and are perfect for growing in large pots on a sunny patio.
The 60-Day Sunshine Project: A Step-by-Step Guide
Growing sunflowers is incredibly simple. They grow so fast you can almost watch them get taller every day!
Step 1: Plant Your Seeds
Sunflowers don't like to be transplanted, so it's best to plant the seeds directly where they will grow.
In the ground: Plant seeds about 2-3 cm deep and 30-50 cm apart.
In a pot: Use a large pot (at least 30cm wide) with good drainage. Plant 2-3 seeds in the center, then thin them out to the strongest single plant once they sprout.

Step 2: Sun, Water, and Food
Sunlight is Everything: The name says it all! Sunflowers need full, direct sun for at least 6-8 hours a day. The more sun, the bigger the bloom.
Water regularly: Keep the soil moist while the seeds are germinating. Once the plants are established, they are surprisingly drought-tolerant, but regular watering will result in better flowers. Water deeply at the base of the plant.
Feed Them: Sunflowers are hungry plants! To get those giant blooms, feed them with a general-purpose fertilizer every couple of weeks once they are about 30cm tall.
Step 3: Watch Them Grow!
Within a week, you'll see the seedlings emerge. In just a month, your plant will be knee-high. And by day 60, you'll likely have a magnificent sunflower bloom turning its head to follow the sun across the Cambodian sky.
It's a simple project with a huge reward. So go ahead, plant some sunshine in your garden today!
